The short version
To start a page on MealTrain.com you enter the recipient's name and their email address. It is the first thing asked, on step one of four. To start one here, you enter the dates. Nobody's email address is collected — not the recipient's, not yours, not the people cooking.
That is the whole difference, and whether it matters depends entirely on your situation. Everything below is the detail.
Why they ask for the email, in their words
It is worth being fair about this, because it is not a dark pattern — it is how their product works. Their own explanation, from the tooltip beside the field:
So the email is there to keep the recipient informed, which is a reasonable thing for a meal train to do. The catch is the order of operations: you hand over a third party's email address to a company before you have necessarily asked them. For a new baby that is usually fine. After a death in the family, or a diagnosis nobody has announced yet, it is a conversation you might want to have first.
This tool sidesteps it by not having anywhere to put an email address. The trade-off is real and it cuts the other way too: nothing here emails anyone, so there are no reminders. See below.

When MealTrain.com is the better choice
Genuinely, and this is not throat-clearing — if any of these apply, use theirs:
- You want people reminded. Their email reminders at a week and a day out are the single most useful thing a meal train can do, and nothing here does it. If your group needs nudging, that is worth more than any privacy argument on this page.
- You want to collect money or gift cards. They have it built in. This site never handles money at all, on purpose.
- You are a church, school or charity running many at once. Their Pro tier is built for exactly that.
- You want the safe, known option. They say they have organised over 120 million meals for 4.4 million families. This is a small Australian site with a fraction of that history, and if the person you are helping would find a familiar name reassuring, that counts.
When this one is the better choice
- The recipient has not been told yet, or would not want their email handed to a company. Nothing here asks for one.
- The address needs to stay private. A new mother's or a grieving family's home address should not sit on a link that gets forwarded through a dozen group chats. Here it lives on your coordinator page and you pass it to each person once they have claimed a day.
- You want more than one meal a day without paying.
- The help needed isn't only food. Add up to twelve other jobs beside the meals — the school run, the dog, a load of washing, the lawn before the wake — each with how many people it needs. They are claimed the same way and come out in the same export. On MealTrain.com that is the $10 Plus tier.
- Some of the people cooking are not online much. There is no account, no app and no password — they tap a link, type their name, done.
- You would rather nobody's inbox was involved at all.
What it costs
Nothing. There is no paid tier, no upsell partway through, and no card to enter. If a one-off charge of a few dollars is ever added to anything on this site, whatever you have already made keeps working.
